On this course you'll study all aspects of hospitality operations - from enhancing your customer service skills in our professional kitchen and restaurant space to developing your strategic thinking. You'll develop into a socially conscious hospitality professional who's able to meet the sustainability needs of tomorrow's customers.
How you learn

Work placements

You’ll have the opportunity to undertake a year-long work placement in between your second and third years. This gives you industry experience to prepare you for your future career – and allows you to graduate with an Applied Professional Diploma to add to your CV. 

Our previous students have undertaken placements with hotels (Hilton Worldwide, Ritz Carlton, Intercontinental, Marriott etc), contract caterers (Chartwells, Compass group), visitor attractions (Disney World, Alton Towers), restaurants (Mitchells and Butlers, Pizza Express) or launched their own businesses (Rob’s All Day Dining).

Live projects

In every year of your course, you’ll get the opportunity to work on live projects to build your skills and professional experience. Recent students have worked on analysing and developing the hospitality offer of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park – which is the leading international centre for modern and contemporary sculpture. 

Field Trips

Field trips are an important part of your studies – allowing you to put theory into practice and connect with your peers and tutors. One of the most popular field trips for our hospitality students was a two day visit to Malton's food market and York – including talks from the hotel manager and a ghost tour.

Networking opportunities

Throughout the course, you’ll have opportunities to develop your own professional network. You’ll meet graduates who work in the hospitality industry and engage with professional bodies such as the Institute of Hospitality.

Competitions

We encourage and support you to take part in external competitions. 

Recently our students won the debating competition at Passion for Hospitality, a competition in London. Another student was recently on the winning team for the prestigious Young Hoteliers Summit – organised by the École Hôtelière de Lausanne and including a challenge provided by Marriott International. Using the work she completed for her final year Research Project, another student recently won the Young Chef Olympiad Diamond Research Award hosted by the International Institute of Hotel Management.

From serving Her Majesty The Queen to running their own consultancy businesses, our award-winning teachers have held key management roles in some iconic hospitality venues. They’re now involved in impactful research. So you’ll be able to understand the latest industry trends and have the opportunity to apply your knowledge to live projects in collaboration with industry partners – making you stand out to employers.

In each year of study you’ll have the opportunity to engage with the industry. You can apply to access placements, volunteering opportunities and work experience through our vast network of industry links.

You’ll develop your understanding of the guest experience and using key hospitality metrics to make sound pricing and business decisions. You’ll also gain the strategic skills you’ll need to shape tomorrow’s hospitality industry – including crisis management and the smart use of disruptive technologies, artificial intelligence and virtual reality. This will complement a core business focus – including marketing, people management and finance – to ensure you’re industry ready.

The hospitality industry is the UK’s third largest employer – accounting for 9% of total UK jobs. The course prepares you for managerial roles in

Equipment and facilities

On this course you work with

  • a state-of-the-art kitchen and restaurant space
  • specialist industry software to manage restaurant operations and elaborate pricing strategies
  • specialist hotel operation management software and food costing and menu management software

 

Entry requirements

UCAS points

  • 112

This must include at least 64 points from 2 A Levels or equivalent BTEC qualifications. For example:

  • BBC at A Level
  • DMM in BTEC Extended Diploma.
  • A combination of qualifications, which may include AS levels, EPQ and general studies

GCSE

  • English language or literature at grade C or 4
  • Maths at grade D or 3

• Access - an Access to HE Diploma with at least 45 credits at level 3 and 15 credits at level 2. At least 15 level 3 credits must be at merit grade or above, from a QAA-recognised Access to HE course, or an equivalent Access to HE certificate.

• entry with prior credit - we consider applications for direct entry to the final year from those holding Higher National Diplomas or equivalent qualifications

If English is not your first language, you will need an IELTS score of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in all skills, or equivalent.

We welcome applications from people of any age. We may be flexible in our normal offer if you can show a commitment to succeed and have the relevant skills and experience. This must show that you will benefit from and finish the course successfully.

We also welcome applications from people studying craft-based courses. For example: Level 3 Advanced Professional Cookery; Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Supervision in Food & Beverage Services.

Please note the University will only admit students who are aged 18 or over at the point of enrolment.
